After complaints about "illegal" activity, Ron Paul faction takes GOP convention to parking lot

Ron Paul supporters flooded the Embassy Suites parking lot in Norman at the conclusion of the OK GOP state convention. The rump convention was formed because of alleged "illegalities" related to proper procedure not being followed.

OKLAHOMA CITY – “Not for sale! Not for sale!” and “Follow the rules! Follow the rules!” That is what was being chanted by Republican delegates and attendees of Oklahoma Republican State Convention, as it moved out into the parking lot of the Embassy Suites in Norman late Saturday afternoon.

Red Dirt Report received calls from UStream viewers from around the country after our name and phone number was posted filmed at the site of the rump convention. All of the viewers (and likely Ron Paul supporters) were very polite and informative and were wanting media to cover the unfolding events.

As this political drama unfolded, emails flooded our Red Dirt Report inbox as well. Joseph wrote: “Romney tried shutting down convention. Ron Paul fighters conducting business in parking lot now.”

Marie Mentesana, a photographer for Red Dirt Report, was quickly dispatched to the scene of the parking lot convention in Norman and along with another freelance reporter were able to talk to a number of conventioneers.

As Mentesana explained: “The Oklahoma GOP was holding a delegates conference and they were not allowing everyone to vote. They shut down everything and left. They took it out to vote in the parking lot" ... and pizzas were provided by Ustream viewers.*

“People are mad," added Mentesana, who also sent us several photos from the scene.

In a voice memo Mentesana sent to us, one attendee explained to her that the convention was adjourned illegally and proper protocol was allegedly not followed by the party leadership.

"We had to move it outside and adjourn it ... we were electing delegates for president," explained one man.

In the background chants of "Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul!!" filled the air. Pizzas were also being passed around to the hungry crowd.

Indeed, Ustream.tv/channel/suriyahfish# was streaming the rump convention in the Embassy Suites parking lot. Everyone was excited when pizzas were ordered for the excited crowd. Some pizzas were ordered for the folks by people in the Netherlands.

Axxiom for Liberty's Kaye Beach also kept us up-to-date on developments as day turned to night and a civil rump convention was conducted in the hotel parking lot.

It is interesting to note that Mitt Romney visited Oklahoma City right before the convention, which was closed to most media. Red Dirt Report was not allowed to cover that visit, despite being allowed to cover the Romney's prior visit to Oklahoma City in October.

Red Dirt Report attempted to reach Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman Matt Pinnell Saturday night and we were unsuccessful. If we do hear from Pinnell, we will be sure to add his comments as well.

UPDATE: As we have discovered (and suspected) it was UStream viewers who paid for those pizzas, not the Ron Paul campaign. There may have been some confusion on the ground. Regardless, people were fed and people were clearly working to make things right. We hope to have more information on this political drama as it continues to develop. Thanks again to all the people who contacted Red Dirt Report today!

UPDATE II: The rump convention adjourned at a little after 9:30 p.m. Freedom and liberty is alive and well in Oklahoma, despite the actions of some at the convention. The Daily Paul and UStream audiences really came through on this one. Thanks so much!! We have learned that Scott Mitchell on News 9's Sunday morning program Your Vote Counts will be discussing this incident and showing pictures taken by our crack photographer Marie Mentesana.

I watched the dbeate last night. I saw the interview with some of the audience. The interviewers asked them who was the biggest loser. They all said in unison Ron Paul. I think Ron Paul had the most intelligent and statements, although some of them veered off topic. He got his point across and the other candidates only stared at him with smug smiles. I think Ron Paul won the dbeate. The audience who said he did not win clearly were biased from the beginning and never listened to Paul. But who cares about them? The bright side is that there for the first time since Barry Goldwater is a Republican Party Presidential nominee candidate who is a true honest to goodness Republican. He is making a point that yes, it is possible for the Republican Party to return to its roots. I'm voting in the Arizona Primary (absentee ballot) for Ron Paul. I don't expect him to be the Republican nominee. In that case, I will switch my party back to the Libertarian Party and work hard for the LP candidate.

@CT. I have a copy of the approved rules. There was no set time for the convention to end rule-wise. Although you are correct there was a prom. However, the order of business was never completed, and a motion to table was never entertained. The suggested rules amendments were never addressed. Neither was a district dispute that was scheduled to be handled addressed. These, and other unresolved issues needed to be tabled if they were not to be resolved. The credentials were never even approved, believe it or not. We voted on a credentials report, and it was changed at least five times afterward throughout the day, even after lunch. The delegates had no idea who was really credentialed.

Does anyone actually have a copy of the convention rules? Was there a set time that the convention ended no matter what? From what I have read, the GOP only had the hall for a period of time and that a prom had the room at 6PM. I have been looking for this information and been running into a lot of opinions and little documentation. All of this said, all of the tabulation spreadsheets need to be finalize and made available at least a week before the convention to prevent any possibility of manipulation on the day of the event.

I was there yesterday. I didn't come as a "Ron Paul guy" or anybody else's guy, just someone who loves liberty and wants to protect our Constitution. What I witnessed was a corrupt party leadership attempt to botch the convention - the only way you could have been there and not realized that would have to be willful ignorance. I was a young CT delegate for Reagan in '79, and Boy, do I know how the Paul supporters and delegates feel. It's worse for them, actually. Yet this amazing Liberty movement is sweeping the country and it cannot be denied. Thanks to the people who are getting video of it live (Streaming?) for us older folks to watch. Because I no longer watch FOX or any of the other dubiously-named "news" channels. They hyped me into voting for a "hot," "surging" candidate in the NH primary this year (not Romney, I know all about him so that's a never vote from me), and for that I am ashamed. My wife and I have since learned about Paul and donated to his campaign and are getting the word out to our neighbors and associates. The absolutely horrible treatment of him by the "news media" has opened our eyes to the depravity the citizens of the U.S. will blindly endure- we were 2 of them! But no longer. Watching this live video from OK made us weep for joy. Thanks to the Red Dirt and Daily websites for writing about this. Thank you, to all the Paul supporters everywhere.

it was indeed a rump convention!! google is your friend, if you think otherwise! a rump convention can happen during a convention WITHOUT any adjournment whatsoever! it takes 50% +1 and thats it! no rules even have to be violated in order to have a reason to rump. all you need is a majority. also they elected a new chairman from the temporary chair that was presiding inside, didnt they? that again says RUMP RUMP RUMP.. WTF do you think a rump convention is??

Just to clarify: This was NOT a rump convention. If you would please update your report that would be appreciated. The convention on the floor was illegally adjourned against the voting majorities wishes as is evidenced by the many videos available. The convention was moved to the parking lot and everyone in on the floor was notified that this was taking place. Once in the parking lot we reconvened. There was not an additional convention, only the one which was continued outside. Thank you for your help in clarifying your coverage. We the delegates of Oklahoma appreciate it.

Romney's delegate math has always been a fraud and hoax. This is being proven as these conventions move forward to expose this. Romney and Obama are one in the same big spenders and will add to our debt and both will continue to kick the can down the road so to speak. Ron Paul actually has a plan to right all this mess. Over half the states still have conventions. The Liberty Movement in those states will go to school on this well documented event and give the establishment GOP even more fits. What can the Ron Paul campaign actually do about the blatant rule breaking by the Romney campaign? In state after state, dirty tricks, intimidation and blatant rule breaking are being documented. In addition to this we have the breach of rule 11 which SHOULD mean that Romney is thrown out of the race... Nice coverage! I was one of the ustreame viewers. Please remove the term 'rump convention' from your article, that means it was illegitimate, and if you are familiar with Roberts Rules and watched the entire ustream (or if you trust the parliamentarian who was present the entire time), then you will know that this was NOT a rump convention, but rather a continuation of the legitimate Oklahoma State convention.

This is precisely what the Travis County (Austin) Texas GOP tried to do, change the rules so that only the nominations committee -- which they chose -- could pick delegates, and remove the ability for precincts to choose their delegates. But we defeated their attempt by amending their rule to allow precinct caucusing, and also ended up in a parking garage, finally ending the convention at 11pm. RON PAUL, 2012!!

At one point over 2000 viewers were watching via ustream /suriyahfish and a viewer Started saying Pizza Bomb for the Patriots. It was an Awesome display of support for not only Ron Paul but for the Entire Liberty movement as viewers from not only here in the USA but all over the world contributed in Support of the Patriots in Oklahoma who stayed the course and Fought back against the illegal run and Bogus RNC Estabishment. I'm from Ohio and I watched the upstream and witnessed the GOP that was conducting the Convention refusing to let people speak or follow the rules. The whole episode was "We're going to do it this way or no way", closed the meeting down without approval from anyone. Definately violated just about every rule he could.

Thank you for reporting. My heart swells thinking of the fine folks in Oklahoma who would not let rule violations dictate convention procedures. 1500+ people across the nation, watched the entire proceedings and saw the prior blatant disregard for the rules, until the convention was moved outside. It was then smooth, orderly and followed Robert's Rules and OK election rules to the letter. I would like to add, I appreciate the Red Dirt Reporter showing up to view how proper the proceedings were. We are not just "Paul people" we are Constitutional Republicans. It is indeed our path to return our great nation back to constitutionality. Our constitution is being eroded by the status quo, both Dems and Reps and it must stop for the sake of liberty. We are not "Paul's people", we are a growing movement who has chosen Dr Paul because of his adherence to the Constitution and loyalty to Americans. We have been the primary funding source from the beginning (as opposed to Obama's and Romney's big Wall Street financiers, who are almost identical). We will remain long after Dr Paul has retired from politics. We will support other sincere Constitutional Republicans as well. You see,, We are not his, he is ours. I am a Nevada state delegate and i watched as the Oklahoma GOP ran a poor convention, the Roberts rule were not followed and it takes 2/3 of the votes for sine de die ( to end the convention ) ...instead the lights were turned off and the 2/3 votes were clearly not there to end the convention... The parking lot convention was ran according to the rules and it was history in the making. i am so proud of these patriots.

I'm in Louisville, KY and was watching on Ustream when all those hungry people were pushed outside. I called the local Domino's Pizza there in Norman, OK and they said they had stopped taking orders for the Convention group in the parking lot after 100 pizzas were ordered. There were people ordering from other local pizzerias as well. Since I couldn't order pizzas for them I ordered all the bottled water they had in the store and had it delivered with the pizzas, others sent drinks as well. It feels good to stick together, no matter where we are.

The Ron Paul campaign DID NOT send the pizza. Strangers like my husband and I paid for the pizza to thank those who stayed out in the parking lot until the business was conducted properly. It's very important to not have any rumors started that equate us to Romney, who handed out subs for votes illegally. That's not us. We (and the Ron Paul campaign) follow the rules, and all of us who paid for the pizza have the credit card statement as proof for it. :) GO OKLAHOMA! We couldn't be more proud of you!

I watched after the crowd reconvened in the parking lot. At the moment, I am in Boston, and a friend of mine was watching from the Philippines! I have seen the GOP break the rules before, and it's never a pretty picture. I believe this is the second "parking lot" convention of delegates. This rule-breaking thing goes back to 2008 when Ron Paul started picking up delegates... so "some of the rules changed" rather mysteriously. Here we see a revolution taking place before our eyes... politely and through courage and conviction.

I was on Ustream, ALL day, with SuriyahFish, the young woman who set it up.. and WOW. When the Mainstays of GOP decided to ILLEGALLY, with NO VOTE, end the first part of this convention, it was IMMEDIATELY SUGGESTED that Anyone who wanted to CONTINUE adjourn to the parking lot. Seems only the LIBERTY party decided to do that, though ALL were invited. I would say, based on what certain OK GOP folk said, getting home for dinner was more important than election OUR next president, so they went home. Ron Paul stated in his speech at UC San Diego to "Have Individuals Held Personally Responsible" for those who Lie in the Media or Cheat the Rules or Break the Laws. You can hold them personally responsible by filing a formal complaint against the Individual's Name, City, State, Addr, Phone, Where they Work, Etc. and then Submit the complaint to Google and Bing to show in the search results. It is incorrect that pizza was ordered by anyone in the Netherlands. This was confirmed on the site DailyPaul.com by the person from the Netherlands who was falsely attributed to buying pizza. It was wrongly reported by the good folks in the parking lot meeting.

I have watched several of these streamed conventions. It is clear and obvious the Romney Campaign is employing Saul Alynski's Rules for radicals in their attempts to give the appearance at least that they are winning. I want to make this perfectly clear. I will never vote for the Chicken Hawk RObaMaNEY.

CORRECTION: It as NOT, I repeat NOT the Ron Paul campaign that sent the pizza. Folks who sent the pizza were a blend of UStream viewers and individuals who congregate for info at the Daily Paul website; neither of these groups are Paul campaign elements. Thanks for the quick coverage...

It was us, "the ustream viewers" who sent the pizza. We wanted to showthat, our support for liberty straches all over the united states!
